EXPANDING AND SIMPLIFYING BINOMIAL EXPRESSIONS + DIAGRAMS

As shown in the diagram above the 7 is being used to multiply the terms inside the first bracket ( 4 + 12x)  and the -2 is used to multiply the terms in the second bracket ( 7 - 4x )

Therefore the solution to this question would be :  7 * 4 + 7 * 12x - 2 * 7 - 2 * 4x

                                                                                28 + 84x - 14 + 8x

                                                                                 84x + 8x + 28 - 14

                                                                                  92x + 14

In the diagram below is a method we call the "FOIL" method.

This is known as  :

First
Inner
Outer
Last

Diagrams:

With the foil method, the process is different from before.

To solve such expressions you will have to follow a specific pattern to arrive at your final answer. That pattern is known as the "FIRST, INNER, OUTER, LAST".

For example:

(2x-2)(x+4)

First - 2x * x
Outer - 2x * 4
Inner - 2 * x
Last - 2 * 4

As shown the terms inside the first bracket were used to multiply the terms in the second bracket.

2x * x + 2x * 4  - 2 * x - 2 * 4

2x^2 + 8x - 2x - 8

2x^2 + 6x - 8
